"Galileo Special: Chernobyl - 25 years after the disaster." "I always had a Geiger counter there" - Interview with "Galileo" presenter Stefan Gödde about his impressions from Chernobyl. Broadcast Sunday 20 March, 19.10 clock, ProSieben) - Motif: The center of the disaster, the reactor block 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Even today, the meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear accident as the worst in the world. In the reactor block 4, it was on 26 April 1986 as a result of a meltdown several explosions that destroyed the barrel-heavy lid of the reactor. Large amounts of radioactivity were hurled into the air. Moderator Stefan Gödde has the Ukrainian city of the 25th Anniversary of the nuclear disaster visited. For "Galileo Special: Chernobyl - 25 years after the worst-case scenario" (aired Sunday, March 20th, 19.10 clock, ProSieben) of the 35-year-olds turned for eight days with a team at Chernobyl and its surroundings.
He describes his impressions in the following interview:
How have you prepared yourself for the research trip to the irradiated area around Chernobyl? Godde: "I was coached by a German physicist, who then accompanied me along with a local man in a restricted zone of Chernobyl. Risk is closely from the radiation, which in some areas is still extremely high - above all, by radioactive dust particles. Me and my team benefited, however, that was during the filming of a snow cover. The risk, the dust on the mucous membranes was getting somewhat reduced. "
Were not you scared? Godde: "Fear less - more respect. We stayed a week in the restricted area and filmed. We lived in a hotel that is not contaminated to happiness. Still, I always had a Geiger counter there - because the contamination is not uniform. Some places are less stressed, it goes by so-called 'hot spots' from a greater danger. The control room of the decommissioned reactor block 3 - right next to the damaged Unit 4 - we were able to visit only under strict supervision. Even today, a quarter century after the disaster, the plant must be serviced and maintained still. To be there was really very scary. "
What do you remember back to life 25 years ago? Godde: "We have the onetime workers visited Pripyat town, which lies just three kilometers from the nuclear reactor. 48 000 people once felt in the 'city of flowers and children's' well lived and worked there. Today everything is deserted and there is a silence, as I have never experienced before. Ghostlike, devouring everything and depressing "
Which picture is the most you stayed in your head? Godde: "At the time of the accident was set up in Pripyat is a fair for a big festival. A Ferris wheel, a car-scooter - everything is still there, like 25 years ago. Today, of course, everything has fallen, rusty and contaminated - an extremely hostile place. This image has touched me very much - especially since you have to remember that people were in Pripyat, only two days after the disaster informed of the danger and evacuated too late. Many of you have died or are still suffering from the effects of super-meltdown. "
Have you met no people? Godde, "Yes. Some simply could not come to terms with their assigned new homeland. I particularly remember one old woman remained, who lives with her husband in all of poverty. She had invited us to lunch and boiled potatoes, which she herself has grown in her garden. Despite my bad conscience - there is something very rude to refuse - I did not do. In retrospect I'm glad, because we took a potato and examined: they were contaminated with radioactive cesium "!
On 26 April 1986, you were ten years old. What is left of you remember that day? Godde: "The details I do not remember exactly, the following discussions, but already, what should you eat? Playing outside is dangerous? And of course, how our lives will be changed when the cloud comes to us? "
What do you think is going to come due to the current events in Japan, the people there? Godde: "I have seen what so inflicts a worst-case scenario and I am deeply saddened. 25 years after the Chernobyl radiation disaster, the region is plagued still, the people suffer the consequences. Japan could now threaten a similar fate to come, and yet the terrible earthquake and tsunamis. That can befall so much pain and misery on people is just incredible.
